1. Background
1.1 The WCED issues documents which cover individual unit standards per learning area. These describe a coherent and meaningful milestone or outcome of learning that is formally recognised. The document includes performance evidence and standard requirements.
1.2 Unit standards describe the outcomes and the standard of performance and also describe what must be assessed. It describes the result of learning and NOT the process of learning.

2. Issue date and review date
2.1 The issue date is the date on which the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) registers the unit standard on the National Qualifications Framework.
2.2 The review date is the period of time for which the unit standard will be operational before which a review and re-registration of the unit standard must take place. The review period set by SAQA is currently three years.

3. Management of the Unit Standard documents
3.1 It is duty of the Centre Management to ensure that all educators have access to copies of the latest and correct unit standard documents.
3.2 The set of original unit standard documents sent to the Centre must be filed in a safe and secure place.
3.3 It is important to emphasise that the unit standard documents are the property of the Community Learning Centre. Should an educator or member of the management staff leave the employ of the CLC, the unit standard documents should be returned or handed over.
3.4 Because there are different draft versions of the unit standards at the Community Learning Centres, it is important that the non-operational versions of the unit standards are retained, but clearly marked to indicate that they are no longer operational.
3.5 The Directorate: Curriculum Development and/or the EMDCs will inform Community Learning Centres (CLC’s) when changes to unit standard documents have occurred and also supply the CLC with an updated version.

4. The registered unit standard titles for 2004
4.1 Annexure A provides centre management and educators with a summary of the current unit standard titles and specific outcomes.
4.2 The summary of the titles and specific outcomes can guide centre management when checking that the versions in the CLC are still operational.

5. Support
5.1 The ABET Curriculum Advisors in the EMDCs are available to provide advice to centre management should it be required.
5.2 The ABET curriculum advisor will call on the relevant curriculum specialist or the SCP: ABET Curriculum when necessary for further support.
