1. On account of the nature of the examination process, no definite dates can be set for the announcement of the examination results. In order to enable principals to make the necessary arrangements to collect and check results, the following target dates and related information are provided. Please note that these target dates and times are only tentative. Should it be necessary to change these arrangements, the relevant information will appear in the press. EMDCs will be kept fully informed of any changes.

Tuesday 30 December 2003 at 08:00   Principals may fetch results at
(NB: Not before 08:00)           EMDCs.
1.2 Principals are given a period of 4 hours to check the results for any obvious errors.

Tuesday 30 December 2003 at 12:00   Results may be given to 
                                    candidates at the respective 
                                    schools.
NB: NO results may be made known to candidates and NO information in this regard may be given to the press before 12:00.

Wednesday 7 January 2004 after 12:00 Results not collected from the 
                                    EMDCs are posted to the schools.

2. As it is imperative that all parties adhere strictly to these arrangements, your co-operation in this regard is essential.

3. The Senior Certificate examination results will also be available on the following website: http://wced.wcape.gov.za  Candidates will have to enter both their examination numbers and their identity numbers.

4. The Department must be informed about the arrangements that schools wish to make regarding the collection of the results. Principals are therefore requested to complete the accompanying form and to send it to the Director of their EMDC before 28 November 2003.

5. The following information will be made available to the media:
  • Names and examination numbers of candidates who passed, per school per district. The following symbols are used: E - Endorsement; M - Endorsement (Merit); D - Endorsement (Distinction); S - Senior Certificate; N - Senior Certificate (Merit); P - Senior Certificate (Distinction). The subjects in which candidates obtained distinctions (A symbols) will also be indicated.

  • The names of candidates who have excelled in the examination by obtaining a pass with Distinction (aggregate of 1680 or more) or a pass with Merit (aggregate between 1260 and 1679)

  • The name of each school’s top candidate

  • The names of the top three candidates (with a minimum of 80%) in each Higher Grade and Standard Grade subject

6. It is of the utmost importance that candidates who do not pass the examination be offered support and counselling. This can be done at the school when the results are given to the candidates or, if applicable, at the relevant EMDC where staff will be available. If a principal refers a candidate to an EMDC, the candidate must be given the telephone number and address of the EMDC. The principal must also provide the EMDC with the candidate’s details.
