The Western Cape Education Department has been informed that the 1% notch increment with effect from 1 July 2003 only applied to educators who had not received any form of salary adjustment during the preceding period of 12 months. It was also established that educators on a personal or maximum notch do not qualify for such notch increments. In instances where the 1% notch increment was awarded erroneously and resulted in an overpayment, the matter will be rectified. Such educators will be notified of the overpayment individually and in writing.

Notch increments apply only to educators on salary notches within their applicable salary scales.

Educators on personal notches (in between two applicable salary ranges) and those on the maximum (16th) notch of a salary range qualify for a grade progression on 1 July 2004.

Educators on a higher notch than the applicable salary scale do not qualify for any further notch increments while occupying the posts concerned, but they do qualify for annual salary adjustments.
