1. The establishment of the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Constantia, one of Cape Town's southern suburbs, is part of the strategy of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for improving the standard of Mathematics and Science in the Province. The Cape Academy was launched officially by the Premier of the Western Cape on 10 March 2003.
2. The first 210 Grade 10 learners will be admitted in January 2004. It is anticipated that 250 learners will be admitted in 2005 and 2006 respectively. In 2006 the Cape Academy intends accommodating 670 learners from Grades 10 to 12.
3. The primary objective of the Academy is to offer high quality education to Grade 10 to Grade 12 learners who have proven potential, especially learners from previously disadvantaged communities. At a later stage the curriculum may be extended to include Grade 8 - 9 learners.
4. The Cape Academy will offer the following subjects: English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology, Computer Studies/Information Technology and Life Orientation. The emphasis will however be on Mathematics, the natural sciences and Computer Studies on the Higher Grade. All subjects will be taught through medium English and Afrikaans.
5. The Academy will also serve as a support centre for educators and learners, a resource centre for curriculum research and development and a specialised in-service training for educators and students in teacher training.
6. As the demands will be high, learners who have proven potential for success in the above subjects and are prepared to work hard are invited to apply to the Academy for enrolment.
7. Principals should note that it is not the WCED’s intention to deprive them of their best learners, but to give learners, especially those from the previous disadvantaged communities, the opportunity to develop their potential at an internationally-supported academy. The Cape Academy offers sophisticated facilities and experienced, highly qualified educators, who have previously inspired senior learners to achieve excellent results.
8. In 2004 the Cape Academy will have residential facilities for 60 learners. Transport for day learners will be available between the nearest railway station and the Academy.
9. School fees will be charged in terms of the SA Schools’ Act, Act 84 of 1996, and WCED policy. The awarding of bursaries to needy learners may be considered. Further information may be obtained from the Directorate: Specialised Education Support Services at telephone (021) 467 2027.
10. The completed attached form, with the required documentation, must reach the Head of the Cape Academy, Private Bag X3, TOKAI, 7966 by no later than 24 October 2003.
11. Principals are requested to distribute the attached pamphlet, to bring the contents of this circular to the attention of educators, parents, guardians and learners and to assist learners who wish to make use of this unique opportunity.
