The Western Cape Education Department encourages all heads, school management teams, school governing bodies, educators and parents to nominate teachers in their communities for the Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year (MSTOTY) Award. The objectives of this award project are as follows:

2. To identify, record and publish the qualities that distinguish these teachers.
3. To arrange for these model teachers to conduct mentoring and/or inspirational programmes.
4. To convene a provincial awards ceremony (February 2004) in order to recognise publicly the work of these teachers, and to announce provincial finalists for national awards.
5. To convene a national awards ceremony (March 2004) where winners and runners-up in the two categories, ‘Serving’ and ‘Retired, but active’, are announced.
