1. Enclosed is a booklet containing information about equipment, materials and facilities which would support the implementation of the subjects which have been proposed thus far under the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) for the Further Education and Training (FET) Band in schools. In addition there is information about suitable qualifications for teachers of these subjects plus some general information as relevant to each subject.

2. The items listed and costed are presented to help you in your preliminary thinking about school planning for implementation of the FET NCS. It is important to note that there is often a distinction between that which might add value and that which is essential for the successful management of the subject. Generally these distinctions are made clear in the enclosed document.

3. In some subjects (e.g. Engineering subjects and Geography) there might still be changes as the information is based on the scope of the subject as indicated in the draft documents, published in October 2002. Updates will be provided in the case of major changes when the final documents are gazetted.

4. The enclosed document should be studied in conjunction with the draft NCS “Overview” documents, dated 28 October 2002, which were sent to schools and which contain details of subject definition, purpose, scope and learning outcomes for each subject.

5. A range of foreign languages, Religious Education and Civil Technology have been identified as subjects to be added to the core list. However, no decision has yet been taken as to how these additional subjects will be funded.

6. Schools will shortly receive documentation about further planning steps and proposed provincial support processes. Announcements about dates for gazetting of the NCS and further information will be shared as soon as it is received. The FET webpage on the curriculum website at http://curriculum.wcape.school.za gives up to date information.
