1. The following is a brief summary of the decisions regarding the standardization of the continuous assessment marks taken at the UMALUSI meeting on 26 June 2003.
1.1 The CASS marks are to be statistically adjusted to the examination marks, within a 5 - 10% margin (cf. Circular 0076/2002).
1.2 If a school's mean CASS mark is below the school's adjusted mean examination mark, the CASS mark is adjusted to 5% above the adjusted examination mean and the standard deviation of the CASS is equated to the examination standard deviation. However, the adjustment of CASS marks of individual candidates will be limited to 50% of the mark obtained by the learner. This means that a learner obtaining, for example 10 marks for CASS, and where the school's CASS marks are adjusted upwards, the maximum that this learner can obtain for CASS is 15 marks.
1.3 The CASS marks in a subject in a school will be unacceptable if the CASS standard deviation is less than 5% and also less than three quarters of the exam standard deviation. In this instance, the candidates will be compensated by 1,25%, i.e. each candidate will be given a CASS mark equal to 25% of the mark that that candidate obtained in the examination.
