In collaboration with the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, Universities of the Western Cape and Stellenbosch and Curriculum Advisers for Life Orientation, an action research programme was launched with the following key objectives:

  • To restore, mobilise and recreate the pride, honour and the culture of learning and teaching in public schools through physical activity and sport

  • To ensure efficient training and fitness programmes for youth

  • To establish and strengthen the sense of fitness and healthy living of learners at school level so that it becomes a life long activity.

  • To feed information into policy with regard to the fitness-level of our Youth, as well as to introduce a Physical Education/movement programme in our schools.

Four EMDCs were identified to pilot this project. The curriculum advisers for Life Orientation identified five schools in each of the following EMDCs: EMDC North, Central, Winelands and Breederiver/Overberg.

1. Scope of the Project
  1. One class of learners from five different schools at each EMDC will be pre-tested to determine their levels of fitness.

  2. Questionnaires will be sent out to investigate the participation of learners in Physical Education and Sport participation, general wellness and healthy lifestyles. Questionnaires are also to be completed by parents.

  3. Learners will participate in an intervention programme involving rope-skipping activities. Workshops to be presented to educators and learners will be followed by participation and implementation of rope skipping activities.

  4. These activities to be monitored by two lecturers from the Universities within the Western Cape over a period of 6 weeks. Results will be collected and collated.

  5. The Curriculum Advisers for Life Orientation will assist in monitoring the process.

The programme for this workshop will be the following:

  • Introduction to programme - D Solomons

  • Practical presentation to teachers and learners - by Maarten Goedeme from Belgium the 2002 World skipping rope champion.

  • Dissemination of learning support material, skipping ropes, videos and cassettes to the selected schools.

  • Tea and a light lunch will be served.
