1. HERITAGE 2002
1.1 Learners from Western Cape schools achieved great success in all categories in the 2002 Heritage Competition.
1.2 The prize for the overall national winners was a trip to Cape Town for the 2003 Freedom Day celebrations, hosted by the National Department of Education. The winners participated in interactive workshop sessions, which included leadership training, a trip to Robben Island, IT computer skills training, and an internet conference with young learners from Palestine and Northern Ireland.

2. PROVINCIAL CLOSING DATES FOR 2003
2.1 The entry forms and reply slips for the 2003 competition (Our roots are speaking) are in the national Department of Education’s guideline booklet, Celebrating Our Heritage, which was sent out to all schools earlier this year. This booklet sets out the various categories and provides teachers with full details of the competition.
2.2 Arrangements for the provincial competition in the Western Cape are being managed by WCED. Please note that while the reply slips in the DoE booklet indicate a cut-off date of 11th April 2003, schools should not assume that it is now too late to participate. EMDC co-ordinators should continue to encourage schools to enter. The closing date for the provincial competitions is 24 July 2003.
2.3 The WCED wishes to encourage as many schools as possible to enter for this year’s competition because of the valuable and rich cross-curricular experience to be gained through celebrating our heritage.
