1. The term of office of all governing bodies of public schools elected or constituted in 2000 in terms of the Measures relating to Governing Bodies of Public Schools and promulgated in terms of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act 84 of 1996), as amended, will expire in the course of the year 2003.
2. The term of office of a governing body extends over a period of three years, starting from the date of the governing body’s first meeting after the election.
3. The election of new governing bodies must, therefore , preferably be completed at least 30 days before the term of office of all present governing bodies expire to enable new governing bodies to shadow present governing bodies. This will enable new governing bodies to take over management duties smoothly.
4. Electoral officers are requested to, in collaboration with principals, arrange all logistics and administrative functions, such as sending notices to parents, preparing the voting hall, providing copy facilities, transport of parents to voting halls, etc. timeously, to ensure the sucessful running of the elections. Expenditure with regard to the elections must be covered by the school’s budget. Limited funds were made available to assist real needy communities to cover transport costs to voting halls. Applications in this regard may be submitted to the relevant EMDC for consideration.
