1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 As Grade 9 marks the end of the General Education and Training Band, a system of promotion is applicable at this stage.
1.2 In each learning area 75% of the promotion mark will be based on school-based assessment (continuous assessment) and 25% on external assessment (common task for assessment).
1.3 All Grade 9 learners at all schools in the province will be required to complete the nationally set common tasks for assessment (CTAs) in all the learning areas.
1.4 If LSEN schools experience difficulty in conducting the CTAs, principals should please contact the Director: Curriculum Development at (021) 467-2622 (tel) or (021) 467-2620 (fax).
1.5 Schools will receive the nationally set Common Tasks for Assessment (CTAs) for Grade 9 learners in all eight learning areas during the third term of 2003.

2. TIMETABLE
2.1 Section A of the CTAs (preparatory tasks) may be administered in schools from 6 October to 7 November 2003 in preparation for Section B. As Section A of the CTAs is part of the teaching and learning process, the school must continue to function normally during this time.
2.2 The following table provides guidelines for the time that should be spent on Section A of the CTAs in the various learning areas:

2.3 The above reflects the approximate time that it will take a Grade 9 learner to complete the Section A tasks. Section A should, however, not be regarded as a timed test.
2.4 Section B of the CTAs (individual tasks under controlled circumstances) must be administered according to the attached national timetable from 10 November to 21 November 2003.
2.5 The CTAs will be administered and assessed at school level. Principals are requested to ensure that a management plan for the administration and assessment of the CTAs in their schools is in place.
