The Heritage Day Competition, launched nationally in 2002, will take place again this year.

The Minister, Professor Kader Asmal, suggested the following sub-themes for this year’s competition:

  • Why I am an African

  • !IKE E: /XARRA //KE (Unity in Diversity)

  • What the Constitution and its Values Mean to Me

The celebration of our heritage provides us with opportunities to uncover and honour aspects of our heritage that we do not ordinarily focus on. It also provides us with an opportunity to understand and celebrate the rich diversity within our country. The focus on ‘Why I am an African’ helps us to locate ourselves within the continent of Africa, which, in itself, is richly diverse.

Educators and learners from the Western Cape did exceptionally well in the national finals last year. The Western Cape Education Department supports the celebration of Heritage Day by schools in the province, and again encourages educators and learners to take part in the competition.

By now you should have received the guideline booklet ‘Celebrating our Heritage’ from the national Department of Education. Should this not be the case, please contact Ms Claire Dyer, National Department of Education (South African History Project), Tel: 012 312 5020.

The deadline for sending entry forms for the competition is the end of May 2003. The entry forms are in the booklet. Entries should be faxed to Ms Gail Weldon at the following fax number 021 467 2258.
