REPRESENTATIVE COUNCILS OF LEARNERS CONFERENCE, 2003

The Education Management and Governance Development Section of the Directorate: Human Resource Development is planning a unique conference for Representative Councils of Learners (RCLs) from 30 June to 2 July 2003.

One member of each RCL from all secondary, combined, intermediate and ELSEN schools in the Western Cape will be afforded the opportunity to attend this auspicious occasion. Delegates will be given the opportunity to interact with one another and express their views on the impact of the new democratic system of school governance over the past 6 years.

The theme of the conference is DEEPENING DEMOCRACY.

OBJECTIVE OF THE CONFERENCE
The objective of the conference is to create an opportunity for youth leaders to

  • be exposed to the latest trends in leadership and school community involvement;

  • share practical ideas on running their RCLs;

  • be exposed to a variety of projects they might wish to implement in their schools;

  • appreciate the importance of youth leadership in a young democracy;

  • be exposed to ways of assisting the school to pursue its role;

  • participate in policy formulation, decision making and leadership affecting the youth;

  • identify our youth’s needs, challenges, aspirations and opportunities; and

  • initiate the establishment of structures and programmes responding to the needs of school-going youth.

The RCLs are encouraged to discuss the conference objectives in order to assist their delegate to make a meaningful contribution to the conference.

LOGO COMPETITION
All learners are invited to participate in a competition to design a logo depicting the theme of the conference. Details of the competition will follow soon.

CONFERENCE BANNER
Each participating RCL will be asked to design a conference banner on an A4-size piece of calico. The banner should advertise, and advocate the importance of, the conference. The individual banners from the RCLs will form the official banner for the conference and will be displayed at the conference. More information on the submission of the banners will follow soon.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE
An organising committee comprising two teacher liaison officers from each EMDC has been established. This committee meets regularly to assist with the planning of the conference and can be contacted for more details.
