1. World Book Day is an internationally recognised event that celebrates books and a love of reading, and emphasises the importance of reading for life-long learning, cognitive development and psychological well-being.

2. The aims of World Book Day celebrations are:

  • To raise awareness about the importance of reading;
  • To reach out and give people access to books;
  • To educate people to take care of their library facilities; and
  • To celebrate books.
3. The theme for 2014 is "Be smart - read books".

4. The theme reflects the value of books, what successes can be achieved through reading books, and the great advantages of wide reading.

5. The WCED will be celebrating with partners such as the Publishers' Association of South Africa, the South African Booksellers' Association, the Department of Arts and Culture, the Western Cape Provincial Library Services and the Centre for the Book (a specialist unit of the National Library of South Africa).

6. The partnership has designed and printed a colourful poster depicting the spirit of World Book Day. See the attached electronic (pdf) version of the poster. Printed posters may be collected from:

8. The WCED encourages all schools to celebrate World Book Day by arranging reading-associated activities such as the following:
8.1 Story-reading sessions at your school.
8.2 A book-donations drive for your school library.
8.3 A World Book Day event and invite reputable speakers to talk about the importance of reading.
8.4 A Book Club and launching it on World Book Day.
8.5 A Reading Club and launching it on World Book Day.
