1. The International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) has declared the month of October to be International School Library Month (ISLM). During October 2011 school libraries across the world and in South Africa will celebrate and promote library and information services at schools, using the theme "SCHOOL LIBRARIES EMPOWER LEARNERS FOR LIFE".

2. International School Library Month will allow those in charge of school libraries around the world to choose a day in October 2011 that best fits their particular situation in order to celebrate the importance of school libraries.

3. The WCED is encouraging schools that have recently set up their school library to celebrate their achievement by launching their school library during the month of October 2011. Please inform your district school library adviser if you plan to do this.

4. Please open the accompanying attachments for

  • a range of suggestions on how WCED schools could celebrate ISLM 2011,
  • useful websites to visit, and
  • the official version of the ISLM logo to use in promotional materials. (Note that this logo must be used for publicising ISLM and not for commercial purposes.)
5. WCED schools are invited (via their district offices) to enter the EDULIS School Library Poster Competition by submitting a poster focusing on the theme "SCHOOL LIBRARIES EMPOWER LEARNERS FOR LIFE". (See the attached invitation for criteria, categories and further information.)

6. The EDULIS School Library Services offer the following:

  • Co-ordination of and support for the development and use of school libraries
  • Co-ordination of and support for training in basic school library administration to teachers in charge of school libraries
  • Evaluation and recommendation of library resources to support literacy and numeracy programmes
  • Support and co-ordination of special school library projects
  • Support and guidance in purchasing of library resources from Norms and Standards and own funding
  • Reading guidance to teachers and learners
  • Visits to schools to conduct book talks
  • Promotion of special library, literacy, reading and book events, such as International School Library Month and World Book Day
  • Orientation sessions for school staff as part of their professional development
  • A cataloguing service for school libraries.
